Morcom International: Elevating Global Communications from Virginia

Founded in 1984 and based in Ashburn, Virginia, Morcom International, Inc. has built a reputation for innovation in critical wireless communications.

Founded in 1984 and based in Ashburn, Virginia, Morcom International, Inc. has built a reputation for innovation in critical wireless communications. Led by CEO Cyrus Namazi, the company’s 35 employees have expertise in the design and deployment of broadband wireless infrastructure systems, aeronautical communications, RF spectrum monitoring, Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS), private LTE networks, Public Safety Communications, and Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS). Morcom offers tailored, cutting-edge technology and integrated solutions for customers around the globe.

In 2021, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) selected Morcom to develop a family of maritime object tracking buoys called MOTT. Morcom’s family of MOTT buoys are interoperable with current U.S. Coast Guard maritime and aviation devices and add Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) used in maritime communications, as well as Iridium satellite communications capabilities to mark, locate and track floating objects at sea. The products are used for waterway security, drug interdiction, search and rescue missions, and provide aid in navigation techniques, marine safety, and migrant interdiction. Morcom has finished the final phase of this project and begun mass production of the MOTT buoys in fall of 2025.

Recognizing the wide range of uses, Morcom set out to introduce the MOTT product family to international markets.

The Challenge: Breaking into Global Markets

As Morcom looked to expand its product beyond domestic success, the team faced a familiar challenge for small businesses: how to identify and reach the appropriate international markets for this specialized product.

The Solution: Strategic Partnership with VALET

Morcom’s experience with VEDP’s Virginia Leaders in Export Trade (VALET) program began in 2022, when a local introduction revealed the program’s potential. Recognizing a rewarding opportunity, Morcom participated in VALET and quickly benefited from its comprehensive support system.

“The program was extremely well thought out. VALET program offers amazing market research resources that we as a small company would not otherwise have had access to,” said Namazi. “It is run extremely well. It should be a model for all other 49 states to follow.”

Through VALET, Morcom participated in a series of high-impact events: a defense expo in Bogota, Colombia in winter 2023, trade missions to Australia and Peru, and a defense trade show in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At each event, Morcom joined the Virginia exhibit booth, drawing significant interest and traffic. These experiences were more than networking opportunities—they were strategic moves to build relationships, meet trade representatives and local distributors, and lay out the groundwork for a robust international distribution network.

The VALET team also conducted a detailed analysis of Morcom’s MOTT product family, pinpointing countries where demand would be the highest. With this intelligence, Morcom began providing collateral and engaging with contacts across Latin America and Australia, moving steadily toward their goal of bringing the product to customers worldwide.

The Results: Building a Global Presence

Morcom’s partnership with VALET has delivered tangible results. The company has picked up valuable contacts in every region visited and is building out its global distribution network. The MOTT product family is positioned for broader adoption thanks to targeted market entry strategies and invaluable resources.

The impact of VALET’s support is clear. Morcom’s leadership credits the program with helping them overcome the barriers that often limit small businesses in international markets. As Morcom continues to expand, their story stands as a testament to the power of strategic partnerships and the importance of tailored support for small businesses with global ambitions.
